The Scottish Classics Expedition

The Best of the Great Glen & River Spey in One Epic Week

Can’t decide between the majestic scale of the Great Glen and the exhilarating flow of the River Spey? Now, you don’t have to choose.

Traditionally, completing both routes would require a two-week commitment. At Snow and Paddles, we’ve engineered a bespoke seven-day itinerary that combines the “must-paddle” highlights of both systems. From the deep mysteries of Loch Ness to the whitewater thrills of the Speyside whisky trail, this is the ultimate Scottish paddling odyssey.

The Highland Hybrid: Loch Ness & The River Spey

A 6-Day Dual-Waters Expedition

Experience the two most iconic water systems in the UK in one seamless adventure. We begin with the vast, deep majesty of Loch Ness before transitioning to the fast-flowing, technical adrenaline of the River Spey.

Chapter I: The Great Glen & Loch Ness

Day 1: The Descent into Mystery

  • Meet: 10:00 AM at Dochgarroch (near Inverness).

  • The Journey: After a quick shuttle to Fort Augustus, we launch directly onto the world-famous waters of Loch Ness.

  • The Experience: Spend the day paddling under the towering Great Glen ridges. We’ll find a secluded wild camp on the southern shore or near the falls at Foyers.

  • Distance: 16km

Day 2: Castles & Sails

  • The Experience: After a lakeside breakfast, we utilize the Highland winds. If the breeze is right, we’ll raft the canoes together and sail across the deep waters.

  • Highlight: A mid-day stop at the foot of the historic Urquhart Castle ruins. We’ll finish the day at the beautiful Dores Bay.

  • Distance: 18km

Day 3: The Transition South

  • The Morning: A final morning paddle brings us back to our vehicles at Dochgarroch.

  • The Shift: We head south to Aviemore—the heart of the Cairngorms—to restock supplies before shuttling to the Spey. We’ll set up our first riverside camp at Boat of Balliefurth, ready for the river to take over.

Chapter II: The Spey & Whisky Country

Day 4: Into the “Washing Machine”

  • The Experience: You are now in the heart of Whisky Country. As we glide through breathtaking Highland estates, the river begins to pick up pace.

  • The Thrill: After lunch, the water gets exciting. We’ll navigate “The Washing Machine,” a spirited Grade 2 rapid that leads us toward our evening campsite.

  • Distance: 25km

Day 5: The Knockando Challenge

  • The Experience: This is the day you’ve been waiting for. We tackle the legendary Knockando Rapids. These technical Grade 2 runs will test your skills and provide an unforgettable rush.

  • The Evening: We wind down near the village of Craigellachie, surrounded by the quiet hum of the Speyside distilleries.

  • Distance: 20km

Day 6: The North Sea Finish

  • The Experience: The river speeds up for the final push. The mountains fade into the coastal plains of Spey Bay. Keep an eye out for ospreys and seals as the fresh water meets the salt of the North Sea.

  • Finish: 2:00 PM. We provide a shuttle back to Spey Bridge to conclude our 6-day odyssey.

  • Distance: 30km

Why This Itinerary Works

  • Zero Waste: We’ve cut out the slow sections to ensure every hour on the water is iconic.

  • Skill Progression: Start with the steady, expansive paddling of the Lochs and build up to the technical rapids of the Spey.

  • Full Service: From shuttles to expert guiding, we handle the logistics so you can focus on the scenery.

What an amazing adventure, this trip had it all! Lots of variety and different canoeing methods, from sailing to navigating fast-flowing rapids. I’m so impressed by the diversity of experiences you had in Scotland; serene Loch Ness to thrilling rapids on the River Spey, and the beautiful scenery that accompanied each paddle far exceeded expectations. Thank you, Nigel and Rhona, for a fantastic time – your knowledge of the river and skills are top-class!! X

Not sure whether to go for open water or white water? Then this is for you. Starting off with a gentle open water paddle and finishing with the mighty Spey. Heed Nobby’s advice for the best way of negotiating the rapids and you will smash it.

A truly epic adventure in the safe hands of Nobby and Rhona. You will quickly bond with your fellow adventurers and make friends for life.
