Follow in the footsteps of Henry David Thoreau as we journey into the heart of the Maine North Woods. This is a land of towering pines, haunting loon calls, and the iconic “Pine Tree State” wilderness. Unlike the adrenaline-fueled Grade V rapids the Penobscot is famous for elsewhere, our chosen route offers a serene, constant flow—making this deep-woods experience accessible to anyone with a spirit for adventure.
The Expedition Itinerary
Day 1: The Journey West

Travel: Fly from London Heathrow via a US hub (New York, Boston, or Philadelphia) to Bangor, Maine.

Evening: Enjoy a comfortable hotel stay (twin-share) to reset and prepare for the woods.

Note: Flights are self-arranged to allow for flexible travel dates or extended stays in the US.
Day 2: Into the Great North Woods

The Shuttle: After breakfast, we meet our local partners for a 3-hour journey into the wild. Two of these hours are spent on private logging roads deep within the Maine North Woods.

The Launch: We’ll stop at the iconic town of Millinocket for final supplies before launching our canoes at Lobster Lake Stream or Old Roll Dam.

The Flow: We begin with a gentle drift to our first remote, federally designated campsite.
Day 3: The Beauty of Lobster Lake

The Paddle: A 17km journey brings us to the stunning Lobster Lake.

The View: With Lobster Mountain as your backdrop, we’ll set up camp on a pristine stretch of sandy beach and woodland. It is, quite simply, world-class wilderness camping.
Day 4: The Wild Inhabitants

The Experience: We rejoin the Penobscot River, drifting silently with the current. This is prime territory for Maine’s famous residents—keep your cameras ready for Moose, Bald Eagles, Beaver, and Chipmunks.
Day 5: The Gateway to Chesuncook

The Transition: As the river landscape shifts, we reach the mouth of the Penobscot and open up into the vast Chesuncook Lake.

Gero Island: we cross the water to spend the night on Gero Island—a place with a unique, ancient energy that stays with you long after you leave.
Day 6: Sailing the Lake

The Adventure: We continue our journey down the lake. If the famous Maine winds are in our favor, we’ll raft the canoes together and hoist a makeshift sail to glide effortlessly toward our final wilderness camp.
Day 7: The Return to Civilization

Extraction: A final morning paddle brings us to our extraction point. Our shuttle will take us back to the comforts of our Bangor hotel.

Celebration: After a long soak in a hot bath, we’ll head out for a well-earned celebratory dinner and drinks in town.
Day 8: Departure or Discovery

The Finish: If your flight is later in the day, take a quick 10-minute taxi to the Bangor Mall for some American-style shopping before heading to the airport for your flight back to the UK.

The Wilderness Experience: In Maine, we stay at designated federal campsites. These are remote, quiet sites equipped with a fire pit, a picnic bench, and a basic pit toilet—true “off-grid” living.

No Experience Needed: While the Penobscot is known for rapids, this specific section is a gentle, constant flow. No previous white-water experience is required.

The “Maine Pace”: We operate on “woods time.” With the sun setting around 6:00 PM and a 5-hour time difference from the UK, expect early nights by the campfire and crisp, beautiful mornings.

From the cute clapperboard hotel we stayed at either side of the trip, to the beautiful scenery, the whole experience was amazing. The canoeing was gentle – first time I’ve done a trip like this – and we camped in incredible spots
Lying on the beach watching the Milky Way above us, roasting marshmallows on the fire, swimming in crystal clear waters, watching bald eagles soar – to say nothing of the peace and quiet of the digital detox!

This is a fantastic adventure.
Arriving in Maine in the autumn as the leaves are turning, we stayed in a quaint hotel with rocking chairs on the porch for the first night before we set off to get the canoes.
From the moment you set off, the scenery is stunning and vibrant, with the trees a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and greens.
My favourite spots are definitely Lobster Lake with its white sands and camping on the beach at Gero Island.
We were lucky enough to see Bald Eagles flying on a few occasions and without any light pollution, the stars were both awe-inspiring and humbling of a night.
My only complaint about this trip is that I had to leave and return home to civilisation.
