Description

The Ultimate River Spey Canoe adventure.

4 Days | 100km | Whisky, Wilderness, and Whitewater and wildlife.

Escape into the heart of the Scottish Highlands for a four-day wilderness adventure. The River Spey isn’t just a river; it’s the fastest-flowing water in Scotland, a lifeline for world-famous distilleries, and home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK. The wildlife along the way can vary from Otter, Osprey to name a few.

From the mountain shadows of Aviemore to the crashing waves of the North Sea, this journey is the perfect blend of technical skill-building and pure, rugged escapism.

The Journey at a Glance

Day 1: The Highland Gateway

  • Start: 10:00 AM at The Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore.

  • Distance: 24km

  • We meet at the iconic Old Bridge Inn (just steps from the train station). After a gear check and briefing, we launch directly into the moving waters of the upper Spey. This day is all about finding your rhythm and mastering the maneuvers you’ll need for the days ahead.

Day 2: Into the “Washing Machine”

  • Distance: 25km

  • Wake up to the smell of fresh coffee and the river air. Today, we enter true “Whisky Country.” As we navigate the breathtaking bends of the river, you’ll sharpen your technical strokes. The afternoon brings the thrill of The Washing Machine, an exhilarating Grade 2 rapid that leads us straight to our wilderness campsite.

Day 3: The Knockando Challenge

  • Distance: 20km

  • Expect adrenaline. Today we tackle the famous Knockando Rapids. This Grade 2 section is a fantastic test of your new skills—short, sharp, and incredibly rewarding. We’ll end the day under the stars near the beautiful village of Craigellachie.

Day 4: To the Edge of the Sea

  • Distance: 30km

  • As the river widens and the pace quickens, we leave the hills behind for the coastal plains. Keep your eyes peeled for seals and ospreys as the Spey meets the North Sea at Spey Bay.

  • Finish: We aim to reach the coast by 4:00 PM before transporting you back to Aviemore (approx. 90-minute drive).

Why Choose the Spey?

  • The Fastest Flow: As Scotland’s fastest river, the Spey does the hard work for you, letting you enjoy the scenery as you glide.

  • Wildlife Wonders: The Moray Firth is a protected sanctuary and one of the best spots in the UK to glimpse dolphins and whales.

  • Whisky Heritage: You’ll paddle past more distilleries than anywhere else on earth, including the home of Glenfiddich.

  • The Descent: Dropping nearly 380 meters from start to finish, this is one of the most dynamic canoe descents in the world.

Important Information

Skill Level: While total beginners are welcome, this trip is best suited for those with some previous paddling experience. We start on moving water from Day 1, so a basic comfort level in a boat will help you get the most out of the adventure.

River Spey canoe trip June 2025

Brilliant! What a thrill! The River Spey canoe trip was truly memorable. Challenging and invigorating both mentally and physically. Together we learned how to navigate the intermittent repeat stretches of gently flowing waters and fast flowing rapids. We had to be ready at all times for that gust of wind, elusive rock, fallen tree or the oblivious person fishing! Lining the canoe up with the v-shaped water into rapids and staying in the flow line of the waves needed good communication, concentration and a range of skilled (and sometimes very creative!) paddle strokes. Looking far ahead and breaking everything down into manageable sections was the secret, taught to us under the calm guidance of Nigel.

The calming natural surroundings balanced with the adrenaline filled exhilaration of the river was perfect. With osprey, buzzard, heron, dipper, tern, kingfisher and many other birds so close, and fish leaping from the water. Very distracting when you need to keep your attention on the water. We left feeling truly accomplished. I’d highly recommend this experience to anyone seeking a rewarding outdoor experience.

    River Spey, Scotland.

An amazing trip. I’m hooked with this one. I just keep having to go back and do it again. The Spey is such an enjoyable paddle. You have a 100km trip over 4 days, on moving water that changes every season. The scenery is stunning, the sound of the water therapeutic, with the mental challenge of where are the rocks, what’s the water doing, where are we going. Always keeping a look out for a sight of an otter, osprey or other wildlife. You take all you need in your canoe with you, with the variety of 3 different camping locations at the end of the day. I don’t have my own canoe but you don’t need one when Snow and Paddles provides all that equipment, paddles, helmets, buoyancy aids, always good quality gear in tip top condition. Nigel is excellent at leading this trip, giving safety briefs and helpful advice.

This was probably my 6th paddle and camping trip with S&P – if you want a bit of adventure with lovely people, lovely scenery without hoping on a flight this is the one to do.
Just the right amount of paddle supported by a gentle flow, evenings were amazing and surprised how light it stayed – that might have been supported by a bottle of whiskey too
Camping sites were all next to the river, and we were blessed with a dry 4 days!

This was an awesome trip and one I will never forget. I have paddled many times before but never on a river and never with another person in my boat, so I had a lot to learn!
From start to finish, Nigel was a very experienced, efficient and effective leader and we paddled the full 100km with only a few ‘minor’ dramas – going backwards down a set of rapids and a messy ’washing machine’ entrance maybe weren’t the best of ‘plans’ but we navigated our way out of them both and didn’t capsize – we liked to keep Nigel on his toes, but had every faith in him rectifying any situation he found himself in.
The River Spey and surrounding countryside is beautiful and changes quite dramatically each day. There is always something to see and what I loved best about the trip was just escaping normal life for a few days and getting back to basics, nature and a simple life where nothing mattered other than the present minute….and how to navigate the next rock or set of rapids on the river of course!
Nigel provides all the kit you require and even quality meals for dinner and breakfast so that you have loads of paddling energy and no excuses! The overnight camping spots on the riverbank were perfect for pitching the tents too and the time scheduling of the trip was extremely effective – not rushed, just managed perfectly according to circumstances.
I felt a huge sense of achievement when we pulled into shore at Spey Bay and as I said, it’s a trip I will never forget for many reasons, and all of them are good reasons!
If you’re even half thinking this might be the trip for you, then get it booked as you will have an amazing time in a very beautiful part of Scotland with a very experienced and knowledgable leader. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler as there is something for everyone. Thanks Nigel!

Absolutely fantastic time, myself & a friend had wanted to do the Spey decent & finally got round to it. Booking was easy with great communication from Nigel.
Met at Aviemore for the start of the trip. Great kit, canoe paddles etc.
Stunning scenery, great paddling & Nigel’s knowledge of the river was spot on. Great camp locations.
I would recommend Snow & Paddles if you’re after a canoe adventure.

I did this trip with Nigel in August 2025. It was absolutely incredible and the memories will stay with me for a lifetime! The river is amazing, the scenery spectacular and Nigel’s knowledge and guidance superb. Book it, you won’t regret it!

Our second canoe trip with Nigel was every bit as memorable as our first canoe adventure on the River Wye. This time we took on the River Spey, and the whole experience was outstanding from start to finish. Nigel is a highly experienced and knowledgeable instructor, and it shows in everything he does , from the quality of the canoes and equipment to the clear safety briefs and helpful advice throughout the journey.

Being on the water is the only way to truly appreciate the scenery and wildlife along the Spey. We were fortunate enough to spot a salmon, an otter, sand martins and even an osprey. It’s a peaceful, immersive way to travel, and each day ends with a different camping location, giving the trip a real sense of adventure.

Snow and Paddles provided top‑quality canoes, paddles, helmets, and buoyancy aids, all in excellent condition. Nigel leads the trip brilliantly, creating a safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable journey. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a unique, well‑led, and thoroughly enjoyable canoeing experience.

  8. Edward Burgin –

Snow and Paddle – an excellent adventure company. Although you have a set itinerary Nigel is willing to make adaptations to accommodate your interest/ abilities to ensure you get the most out of the trip.
Having paddled across Sweden and recently down the Spay with Nigel I have learnt more about how to safely traverse the terrain making the trip all that more interesting.
Go on a trip with Snow and Paddle and come back refreshed and enlightened ready to take on a new adventure.
