Description

The Great Glen Canoe Adventure: Coast to Coast Across Scotland

60 Miles. Two Coasts. One Iconic Journey.

Experience Scotland from its most spectacular vantage point—the water. The Great Glen Canoe Trail is a world-class paddling route that carves through the rugged heart of the Highlands. Stretching 60 miles from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east, this journey takes you through ancient glen landscapes, historic man-made canals, and the legendary, deep waters of Loch Ness.

The Experience

This isn’t just a paddle; it’s a coast-to-coast expedition. Over five days, you will navigate the geological fault line that divides Scotland, traveling through a landscape shaped by history and nature. Whether you are seeking a physical challenge or a peaceful immersion into the Highland wilderness, the Great Glen offers an unforgettable perspective on the British Isles.

Expedition Highlights

  • The Full Traverse: Complete the official 60-mile trail, crossing the entire width of Scotland.

  • Iconic Waterways: Navigate a diverse mix of 22 miles of calm, man-made canal sections and the vast, inspiring waters of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, and Loch Ness.

  • Dramatic Landscapes: Paddle beneath the shadows of soaring mountains and through “The Great Glen”—one of the most inspiring stretches of countryside in the world.

  • History at Every Turn: Pass through the historic lock systems of the Caledonian Canal and glide past the ruins of Urquhart Castle.

The Journey at a Glance

Feature Details
Duration Typically 5 days (flexible based on fitness and pace).
Route Fort William to Inverness (West to East).
Terrain A blend of sheltered canal stretches and expansive open-water Lochs.
Difficulty Moderate; suitable for those with a good spirit of adventure and basic fitness.

Since its official launch in 2008, the Great Glen Canoe Trail has become the gold standard for UK paddle expeditions. The route is well-serviced with dedicated trail facilities, yet it retains a feeling of deep, Highland isolation.

  • The Pace: We generally cover the 60 miles over 5 days, allowing plenty of time to soak in the scenery, spot local wildlife, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the canal-side communities.

  • The Craft: Whether you are in a solo kayak or a shared open canoe, the trail offers a rewarding mix of technical interest (portaging locks) and long, meditative stretches of open water.

“From the shadows of Ben Nevis to the shores of Inverness—this is the definitive Scottish wilderness experience.”

we have been leading annual expeditions along the Great Glen Canoe Trail. Our success is built on flexibility, allowing us to adapt quickly to the unpredictable weather and geographical conditions of this stunning region.

While we cannot promise sightings of every local species, we can guarantee fresh air, plenty of laughter, and the immense satisfaction of completing a physical challenge. We maintain a high success rate, and on the rare occasions we haven’t finished the journey, it has been due to environmental conditions rather than a lack of planning or ability.

Our philosophy is to keep these experiences affordable; as such, our prices have remained consistent for over a decade, making our trips more competitive than many others in the industry.

Unlike many companies, we do not include food in our packages. We have found that providing meals can be restrictive due to varying dietary requirements and the logistics of keeping food fresh for a week. By bringing your own food, you have the freedom to eat what you want, when you want. However, the social experience remains the same—we still gather around the campfire each evening to relax and share stories.

We look forward to welcoming you on the trail.

ITINERARY

The Great Glen Traverse: A Coast-to-Coast Canoe Odyssey

60 Miles. 5 Days. One Legendary Route.

Embark on a bucket-list journey across the rugged heart of the Scottish Highlands. Stretching from the Atlantic gateway of Fort William to the North Sea shores of Inverness, the Great Glen Canoe Trail is a world-class expedition that blends the tranquility of historic canals with the awe-inspiring scale of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, and the world-famous Loch Ness.

This is more than a paddle; it’s a masterclass in Highland discovery.

The Experience

Adventure for Everyone. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to conquer the Great Glen. While this trip covers significant distance, the pace is designed to be enjoyable. When the wind is at our backs, we work as a team; when the water gets vast, we raft up and sail.

Expedition Highlights

  • Canoe Sailing: Experience the thrill of rigging your canoes into rafts and catching the wind across the 36km length of Loch Ness.

  • The River Run: When water levels allow, we trade the canal for the river—splashing into Fort Augustus and Inverness via the beautiful River Oich and River Ness.

  • Castle Views: Avoid the tourist crowds and enjoy the “best seat in the house” as we pull our canoes onto the beach for lunch beneath the ruins of Urquhart Castle.

  • Remote Wild Camping: Spend your nights in secluded bays and hidden forest spots, including the tranquil Clunes Bay and the southern shores of the Great Glen.

Your 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Under the Shadow of Ben Nevis

We meet at either Neptune’s Staircase or Muirtown Basin (we choose our direction based on the wind to give you the best ride!). We launch into the Caledonian Canal, paddling toward Gairlochy with the stunning Ben Nevis range at our backs, before making camp on the shores of Loch Lochy.

Day 2: The Jewel of the Glen

After a relaxed breakfast, we head for Laggan for a pitstop at the famous floating barge pub. From here, we enter Loch Oich. Though it’s the smallest loch on our route, its intimate scenery and lush islands make it a firm favorite for many adventurers.

Day 3: Arriving at the Abyss

Today we choose our path: a calm canal drift or an exciting river run down the River Oich into Fort Augustus. After a celebratory lunch (usually local Fish & Chips!), we catch our first awe-inspiring glimpse of Loch Ness. We’ll raft the canoes and begin our first session of Canoe Sailing to reach our remote camp on the southern shore.

Day 4: Sailing with Monsters

We spend the day harnessing the wind, sailing across the 36km expanse of Loch Ness. We’ll stop for a unique beach lunch at Urquhart Castle before finishing the day at a secluded spot near the end of the loch—or, weather permitting, at the famous Dores Inn for a celebratory pint looking back at the water we’ve just conquered.

Day 5: The Final Reach

Our final morning offers another choice: the steady canal or the winding, scenic River Ness. Arriving in the Highland capital of Inverness by water is the ultimate way to finish your journey. We unpack, celebrate our achievement, and head for home by midday.

Logistics at a Glance

  • Fitness: Relaxed to moderate. We prioritize teamwork and “sailing” over brute force.

  • Skill Level: No prior canoe experience required, but participants must be competent swimmers.

  • The “Team” Vibe: This is a group expedition. We load gear, prepare meals, and navigate the locks as a single team.

“Watching the mist rise off Loch Ness from the seat of a canoe, knowing you’ve crossed half of Scotland under your own power… there’s simply nothing like it.”

I have just completed the Great Glen trip with Nigel at Snow and Paddles. What a fun and amazing trip we had. Traveling with like minded people.
This is the 4th canoe trip I have done with snow and paddles and as always the equipment they supply is first class. Nigel is an excellent leader and instructor giving clear instructions and advice and of course safety is always a priority.
I would highly recommend traveling with snow and paddles in fact I wouldn’t do a canoe trip with any body else.

You don’t have to be super fit, take it from a guy who has just turned 70.

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was my second paddle trip with Snow and Paddles, and I can honestly say it won’t be my last.

I first joined Nigel on a canoe expedition in Sweden last year and had such an amazing time that I booked the Great Glen trip the day after I got home. I’m now booked onto the River Wye weekend with my daughter in August, which probably says everything you need to know about how highly I rate these adventures.

The Great Glen trip was brilliant. Nigel provided everything we needed, from quality equipment to clear, practical guidance that gave everyone the confidence to enjoy the journey. We paddled the Caledonian Canal, worked our way through the locks, crossed the legendary Loch Ness, and wild camped along the route. It was a fantastic way to experience Scotland.

Nigel strikes the perfect balance between being funny, sensible, and incredibly knowledgeable. He has a relaxed approach, treats everyone like capable adults, and is always there with advice and encouragement when it’s needed. You feel completely safe in his hands without ever feeling like you’re being micromanaged.

The people on the trip were another highlight. Spending a few days paddling and camping with a great group of like-minded people made the whole experience even more memorable.

Scottish weather can be unpredictable, but that’s all part of the adventure. If you go with the right attitude and embrace whatever the conditions throw at you, you’ll have an unforgettable time.

If you’re looking for a genuine adventure with an experienced guide who clearly loves what he does, I couldn’t recommend Snow and Paddles highly enough. I’m already looking forward to my next trip.

Just back from the Great Glen Canoe Adventure with Snow and Paddles, and it’s honestly one of the best things I’ve done in years. Five days paddling coast to coast across Scotland, from Fort William through to Inverness. 60 miles of canal, loch and river through the heart of the Highlands.

The scenery is absolutely world-class. Setting off in the shadow of Ben Nevis, working through the historic locks of the Caledonian Canal, then out onto the big open water of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and finally Loch Ness itself. Rafting the canoes together and sailing the wind down the 36km length of Loch Ness was a real highlight. Pulling up on the beach for lunch beneath the ruins of Urquhart Castle, with none of the tourist crowds, is a view I won’t forget.

Nigel, the owner, is what makes this trip. He’s endlessly knowledgeable, calm and genuinely good company, and he gets the balance exactly right. Clear, practical guidance and safety always front of mind, but he treats everyone like a capable adult rather than micromanaging. You feel completely in safe hands the whole way. The kit he supplies is first class, and his flexible approach of reading the wind and choosing canal or river run each day meant we always got the best of the conditions.

The wild camping was a trip in itself. Secluded bays and hidden forest spots along the shore, sharing stories with a brilliant group of like-minded people. That social side, the laughter after a long day on the water, made the whole thing.

You don’t need to be super fit or have any canoe experience, just a good spirit of adventure and a willingness to embrace whatever the Scottish weather throws at you. I couldn’t recommend Snow and Paddles more highly. Already thinking about which trip to book next.
